How do we lose hope and how do we get it back?

Many of us have tried to better ourselves and have tried to become someone we want to be or have things that we feel we deserve.  Sometimes what we try works for us, but to often the results end in failure.

One of the stronger ideals in society is that people want to put in the least amount of effort and get more than they deserve for their effort.  With this kind of mentality, people are going to get discouraged when they don’t get what they feel they deserve. Failure after failure causes people to lose hope and not to see what is going well in their lives.  They see no way out of their situation.

God is hope.  We must learn to trust in Him and know that God always has our best interest at heart.  He hears every prayer, and in time will answer your prayer.  It may not be the answer that you want to hear and it may not come as quickly as you would like, but you can rest assured that it will be the best answer for you and will be in your best interest.  Don’t lose hope because things aren’t going your way.  Trust God and wait patiently for His answer.  The answer may be more than you ever expected.

One thing to remember is that we as humans have been given an assignment to fulfill by the creator while we are here on this earth.  We were born to make an impact in  our lives, our family, our workplace, our community, and ultimately the world.

We must change the way we look at ourselves and ask the one who created us some questions:

  1. Why am I here?
  2. What assignment do you have for me?
  3. To who am I assigned to?
  4. Where am I supposed to be?
  5. When am I supposed to do this assignment?

One of the reasons we lose hope is that we don’t know why we are here.  Because we don’t know why we are here, we look around and let the external things around us dictate who we are.  The world cannot give us the hope that we need.  We must look up to the one who gives real hope.  We don’t have to be confused, lost, and broken like some of us are or have been in the past.

The way we get it back is to receive it from God.  In our world, when we are sick we go to the doctor so he can diagnose our symptoms.  But the doctor does not heal the symptoms; he diagnoses the symptoms and gives you  a prescription for medicine to make you well again.  With God, the situation is totally different.  He diagnoses and also heals us and our situation.  In Him is everything that we can and will ever need.  In God, we will find our identity.  A seed needs the ground, sunlight, and water to grow.  In this scenario, we ourselves are the ground, His word is the seed, His presence through worship is the sunlight, and we are watered and grow by meditation and action.

Everything God creates has a purpose.  Colossians 1:16 states: For by Him all things [us] were created, in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities—all things were created through Him and for Him.  You must settle this in your heart that you were born to be loved by God (Romans 5:8 and Jeremiah 31:3).  We were born to be a family (Romans 8:15).  We were born for a purpose and that purpose is to know God (Ephesians 1:9, 1:11, Romans 8:24).  We were born for a mission (Mark 3:14, Acts 10:42, 14:7).

We must stop trying to be our own God, our own provider, our own direction, our own healer, and our own wisdom. We must let God be God and us be us.  This is the best recipe for success and hope.  Let God be your Plan A.  There is no Plan B.
