How do I grow with Christ?

Continuing to grow with Christ and shape yourself into the person you are supposed to be in Christ will be your next step.

How do you grow as a Christian? Follow these helpful guidelines:

Read God’s word.  The more you read God’s word, the more you will learn what God’s plan is for you and for this world.  God’s word is the truth and is complete; there is no subject that is not discussed in the Bible and we can learn how to handle any situation thrown our way by reading His word.  The Bible accomplishes what it promises.  What God says in the Bible WILL occur.  God cannot lie.  By reading God’s word, we find out valuable information and guidelines to live by.

Pray.  Prayer is how we communicate with God.  Begin every day by talking to God from your heart.  God hears and promises to answer every prayer (Matthew 7:7-11, Ephesians 3:20). So how are we to pray to God?  Jesus gave us a great example in Matthew 6:9-13.

This, then, is how you should pray:

“‘Our Father in heaven,
hallowed be your name,
your kingdom come,
your will be done,
on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us today our daily bread.
And forgive us our debts,
as we also have forgiven our debtors.
And lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from the evil one.

Fellowship with other believers.  Being around other people who also believe Jesus is Lord is extremely important.  You must go to church so you can have this fellowship with others and to learn more about God.  Pastors do an excellent job of teaching us about scripture and how to apply it to our lives.  It’s not enough for us to just read the Bible on our own; we need sound teaching and the support of others who believe the same way we do.  We also have a support group of people who can encourage us and pray for us in our time of need.  And best of all, Jesus said in Matthew 18:20:  for where two or three are gathered in my name, there am I among them.”

Obey.  God is a loving father and He knows what is best for us.  If we know that He loves us, it’s easy to trust and obey Him.  God will never lead us astray and will try to point us to the path that He has laid out for us.  Jesus said in John 15:10:  If you keep my commandments, you will abide in my love, just as I have kept my Father’s commandments and abide in his love.

We can be lead astray if we don’t follow these guidelines

Remember:

  1. Seek God (Matthew 6:33).
  2. Separate yourself from the love of the world (1 John 2:15-17).
  3. Forget your past; you are a new creation in Christ (2 Corinthians 5:17)
  4. Get into a good church (see fellowship with believers)
  5. Water baptism- this is an outward demonstration of the work God is doing in you
  6. Tell others- we must go into the world and share Christ with those who don’t know him
