Minding your own business with God.

Is it possible? That we must not have unfinished business in the kingdom of God? ABSOLUTELY!

Your Journey

You can compare spiritual growth to a journey. First we come to faith and then start walking step-by-step with God.  As we travel further with God, we travel into higher regions of spiritual maturity. For many people, we start out strong willing to do whatever God wants us to do and then we slowly fall back into old habits. Perhaps the journey is too difficult or perhaps sin becomes a distraction. Maybe a we reach what we think is a dead end and don’t have the patience to wait for God to tell us the next steps. Whatever the case, the spiritual journey with God is incomplete.

The Unfinished Project

During Haggai’s day, the people of Jerusalem had an unfinished project. Somewhere around 538 BC, the Israelites have returned from Babylon and are ready to lay the foundation for the new temple. Everyone was very excited to complete the temple. However, 2 years into the project, the work came to a screeching halt.  For 16 years, the temple was not completed. The Israelites went about their business, working and having families. Meanwhile the temple remained unfinished.

Finally God told Haggai to tell the people to reconsider what they were doing and to refocus on the temple (Haggai 1:6-7). They had to complete the task God ordained them to do.  Not only did their spiritual lives depend on it, but their physical lives depended on it too (Haggai 1:9-11).

Like the Temple

Are you like the temple?  Has your spiritual life become unfinished business?  Have you stopped growing as a believer?  If you answered yes to any of these questions, “consider your ways” (Haggai 1:5). You can get back on track with God.  He’s always waiting with church-274159_1920open arms to receive you.

Decide what you need to do to get back on track. Do you need to repent from long-term sin? Do you need to reestablish contact with fellow believers? Maybe you need to renew some spiritual disciplines like reading your Bible, prayer, and fasting. If you are unsure what you need to do, ask God. He will give you the answer you need.  The Holy Spirit is always ready to assist you with the next step.

Take the Steps

Scripture encourages you to take whatever steps are needed to finish your journey (Hebrews 6:11).  God is ready to help you but he cannot do you work for you (Philippians 1:8).  Only you can make the decision to be faithful and obedient.  Only these steps will lead you to a mature spiritual life with Christ.

God loves you more than you can ever imagine.  God gave His only Son to pay for our sins so we didn’t have to spend a life apart from God.  I can imagine no greater love than sacrificing your life for another person just like Jesus did. If you ask, God will restore you and help you take the steps you need to become the person you are supposed to be.

Is it possible?  Absolutely.  God will point you in the direction you need to go so you won’t have unfinished spiritual business.
