This means that anyone who belongs to Christ has become a new person. The old life is gone; a new life has begun! 2 Corinthians 5:17
Several months back, I purged my closet of all the clothes I can no longer fit in because they are too big. It’s freeing, but at the same time I’m sad. What is comfortable to me and what I’ve worn for years is no longer a part of my life.
As I bagged up my clothes, I started to second guess myself. What if I need these again? In my mind, I still look the same way I did before I lost all of the weight. Mentally I see no change and I’m afraid to let go of what is comfortable in my life.
I think we get this way with Jesus as well. We accept Him in our lives and try to make changes because we want to be more like Him. However, we are still fighting our flesh and what is comfortable to us.
Because we are still living in the flesh and not in the spirit, we manage to go back to old habits instead of creating new habits. Instead of turning to Jesus when we are stressed or upset, we turn to the box of cookies or the tub of ice cream. Instead of spending the evening with Jesus when we are bored or lonely, we spend the evening on a bar stool looking for companionship.
Let go of all of these old habits and what is comfortable. Eventually what seems comfortable to you will become less important and less comfortable. What may seem awkward and uncomfortable will become a part of your life and more comfortable with time.
Spend time with God and listen to what He has in store for you. You might be amazed with His plans. You are free of the old you. The old you no longer has power over you. You are freer than you ever imagined. That is who you truly are in Christ.
