As we read Biblical accounts we discover that angels are real spirit beings created by God. They are mighty in strength, intelligence and very swift creatures. They have wings, they have ranks, and they are mobilized by God’s heavenly and earthly agenda.
Revelation 12:4 says that 1/3 of angels were expelled from Heaven when an archangel named Lucifer wanted to overthrow God. We read in Isaiah 14:12-15 that this powerful being was the leader of all angels in Heaven. Lucifer was the worship leader in Heaven. Because of his position, he wanted to overthrow his creator and was unsuccessful. Tod threw him down to the earth. Before he finished his speech 1/3 of the angels followed him and the rest of the angels remained in Heaven with God.
The remaining angels make God’s army. We are talking about armies and armies of angels. They possess a military discipline just as the natural army of our earthly world. In 2 Kings 6, the prophet Elisha and his servants were surrounded by the Syrian army. They were outnumbered for war. Elisha’s servant cried out to Elisha asking what they should do. Elisha responded that they should relax. He knew they were outnumbered so
he asked the Lord to open his eyes.
When the spiritual eyes of Elisha were opened, he saw that the hillsides were filled with God’s army of angels. There were also horses, chariots of fire, and more angels ready for battle surrounding the enemies God gave them victory over the Syrian army.
This angel army is found again as the Lord appears to Joshua in Joshua 5:13-14. As Joshua is preparing for battle to conquer Jericho. Joshua saw a man with his sword in his hand and asked if he was to help Joshua or was against Joshua. The man answered that he had come as a captain of the host of the Lord and that he was an angel of the Lord’s army. The word host is described as a well-equipped soldier and a warrior ready for war.
These descriptions of angels show insight into a very organized angelic army. We can see that they are created to carry out God’s plans under the command of Jesus. They are mobilized by the spoken word including every believer with God’s word in them.
We will continue our series on angels in the next sermon. Stay tuned.
