Today Jesus is spending His time in His Father’s house. Jesus briefly visited the temple the day before and was none too pleased with what He saw. He returns the next day to rectify what He saw the day before. Jesus entered the Temple and began to drive out all the people buying and selling animals for sacrifice. He knocked over the tables of the money changers and the chairs of those selling doves (Matthew 21:12).
The sight of His Father’s temple being disrespected was too much for Jesus. He said to them, “The Scriptures declare, ‘My Temple will be called a house of prayer,’ but you have turned it into a den of thieves!” (Matthew 21:13). Jesus was calling out the Pharisees and everyone who wanted to profit from Passover. This was a holy week for the people of Israel and not a holiday for taking advantage of those who were trying to follow the law of God.
That day, Jesus chose to stay a while and heal the sick and give hope to those who needed it. The blind, the lame, any one who would seek Him with a humble heart was received and healed. Priests and teachers rejoiced in and thanked God for Jesus.
This did not sit well with the Pharisees and only angered them further. They confronted Jesus when the people praised the Son of David. Jesus only called them out for their hypocrisy.
They plotted the death of the Spotless Lamb.
Jesus left the temple and returned to Bethany to prepare.
After all, He was the Passover sacrifice this year.
