Lately, my heart has been uneasy.
I see rioting, looting, panic, and who knows what to believe concerning COVID-19. One day, everything is fine and the next day everything is a disaster. Don’t even get me started on how ugly and hateful people have become. If I didn’t have to use Facebook for work, I would have deleted my account long ago, disappointed in the behavior of many of the people I’m “friends” with. The sheer hatefulness I’ve seen invade this world in the past few months put a damper on my otherwise optimistic personality.
This world makes it difficult to find peace sometimes. The situation and uncertainty we find ourselves in now makes it even more difficult to find peace. We are all tempted by our flesh and our wants. We let our situations boil up in our minds and let doubt in.
I want to believe in the goodness of people. I want to believe that everything will always be fine. I want to think that everyone will always do the right thing. But we all know that is just wishful thinking. Living in the flesh is selfish and wants only to please itself. Our world has become selfish and it is more evident now than it has ever been before. The words in Isaiah 47:8 ring more true in the attitudes of society today than ever before: “I am, and there is no one besides me”.
So when our heart is uneasy, what do we do?
We lean on God.
We also remember these things:
- God’s peace will always ease our minds. Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. Philippians 4:6-7
- The Spirit of God is always with us. “And this is my covenant with them,” says the Lord. “My Spirit will not leave them, and neither will these words I have given you. Isaiah 59:20
- God has a plan for you and sometimes these uneasy situations play a role in the plan. For I know the plans I have for you,” says the Lord. “They are plans for good and not for disaster, to give you a future and a hope.” Jeremiah 29:11
- Everything we need, God will provide for us. “That is why I tell you not to worry about everyday life—whether you have enough food and drink, or enough clothes to wear. Isn’t life more than food, and your body more than clothing?” Matthew 6:25
- God loves us more than we can ever imagine and nothing can come between you and that love. And I am convinced that nothing can ever separate us from God’s love. Neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither our fears for today nor our worries about tomorrow—not even the powers of hell can separate us from God’s love. Romans 8:38
When we face uncertain situations, God is there to pull us through the battle. He can calm your jittery heart and bring you the peace that you long to find. God can heal hurt feelings and tell you how valuable you are in His eyes. He can settle the unease that resides in your soul because of this current world situation.
Don’t let this world bring you down; this life is only temporary. We cannot fathom the amazing blessings God has for us in eternity. We can spend our days in despair and worry or we can let our Heavenly Father soothe our hurts and uneasiness. We can choose to let Him do the worrying for us. He knows exactly what we need when we need it.
Put your faith and trust in Him and Him alone.
