Are you a good sheep?

“I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd gives His life for the sheep.” John 10:11

In the book of John, Jesus introduces Himself to us as the Good Shepherd. He describes a relationship between the shepherd and the sheep in great detail. During the time of Jesus, this allegory would have made sense to the majority of the Israelites. Shepherding was a common job and lambs were used as sacrifices in the temple for the sins of the people.

Much has been said about Jesus as the Good Shepherd. But have you ever stopped to ask yourself if you are a good sheep?

In John 10, Jesus described the relationship He wants to have with His followers:

  • I know My sheep, and am known by My own” (v. 14). How well do you know Jesus? Are you the closest of friends, or just passing acquaintances?
  • I lay down My life for the sheep” (v. 15). Are you willing to lay down your life—or your ballgame, your social media, your smartphone—for Jesus?
  • My sheep hear My voice” (v. 27). Do you spend time in His word getting to know His voice so you will recognize Him when He calls to you?
  • Follow Me” (v. 27). Do you follow Jesus all the time or when it’s convenient? Do you attend church regularly or only when it is convenient?

We are blessed with the Good Shepherd, who loves us more than we could ever imagine and who protects and provides for us every day.

What can you do today to thank Him for His care and to make His job a little easier?
